Research log 4

Lyness, D'Arcy. "How Can I Improve My Self-Esteem?." kidshealth.org. The Nemours Foundation, march 2009. Web. 19 Oct 2011.

The article "How Can i Improve My Self-Esteem?" by D'Arcy Lyness was mainly about self-esteem in younger kids from the early ages of life to ones teenage years. This article gave examples and exercises for young kids that will help them practice how to build health self-esteem.  They laid down simple steps such as; set goals for yourself, have fun, try new things, and take pride in your opinions and ideas. "Self-esteem is all about how much we feel valued, loved, accepted, and thought well of by others — and how much we value, love, and accept ourselves."  I liked this quote because it was just one of many this article had about self-esteem.  They had many different definitions because they claimed there were many different ways it can be interpreted.  The author got these definitions from multiple sources such as other professors in child studies.  They talk about how authority figures such as parents and teachers, and when kids are young they can not knowingly break down a kids self-esteem that can last a long time.

The main reason i choose this article was because of the fact is was based on young kids and how it starts at such a young age because kids tend to tak things very serious and are very impressionable.  So far ive mainly focused on research on the effects self-esteem has on people my age or older so it was nice to get some perspective on where problems may start and then seeing ways those problems can be fixed at a very young age.  It was also nice to get a wide variety of definitions because not everyone can understand things as clear as they want from one persons point of view.

"High Self-esteem is Not Always What It's Cracked up To Be."ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily LLC, 28 April 2008. Web. 17 Oct 2011.

In the article "High self-esteem is Not Always What It's Cracked Up To Be" written in the science daily online news article they discuss what roles can play in a persons life that can lead to an increase in self-esteem, and how once can have too much of it.  They discuss the difference between high self-esteem and healthy self-esteem, which they state as "secure" self-esteem and "fragile" self-esteem.  After talking to researchers and professors from the University of Georgia they established that fragile self-esteem is not better to a person mental health then low self-esteem.  People that are fragile tend to be a lot more defensive and argumentative towards other people instead of just being the bigger person and believing in themselves.  High self-esteem can lead to aggressive behavior to enhance a persons self worth to protect ones ego. "Individuals with low self-esteem or fragile high self-esteem were more verbally defensive than individuals with secure high self-esteem." This statement means that people with low or fragile high self-esteem are more likely to counteract ones thoughts with an argument or a negative emotion in comparison to someone with secure self-esteem who would like brush off the comment.  These people are more likely to accept themselves and less likely to make excuses for their actions.  With all this being said they stated that having high self-esteem is not a bad thing and is recommended, but it should be controlled and broken down into finer gradations to be better understood.

I choose this article because it was important for me to find some information on the negative aspects of self-esteem instead of the usual norm, which is everyone believing you need unlimited self-esteem to be successful in life.  This was the first article that really touched on this aspect of my topic.  I also liked it because i felt it had a lot of relation to articles that we have discussed in class so it gives me a lot more to think about.  I also liked this article because there was a lot of useable quotes my professors that have high knowledge and have done studies on the subject.  So from that point of view i found the article very valuable and valid.

Research log 2

Kwan, Virginia, Oliver John, Seinenu Thein. "Broadening the research on self-esteem: A new scale for longitudinal studies." Self & Identity. 6.1 (2007): 20-40. Print.

In the article " broadening the research on self-esteem: A new scale for longitudinal studies" by virginia Kwan and and other they discussed the life span of self-esteem from when it starts in a person to when it ends in a person, and mainly dealing with age.  They also talked about the different ways it can start in a person life, such as how drastic or dramatic experiences have a greater impact in either raising or lowering ones self-esteem.  Again in this journal there was a lot of studies and research done that was clearly laid out in charts to help make it easier to represent the information they found.  The authors dealt a lot with the adult aspect of  self-esteem and the affects it had on your actions in life and in the work world.  They later discussed the history of self-esteem, and the first ever test used to measure it.  They showed all the test used from back in the 70's till now, and they talked about how certain test only worked on a certain group of people whether it was a different age or gender.  Competence and social acceptance were to main themes and definitions given for self-esteem, and it was stated that they have been a part of the changing definition of self-esteem since it was discovered.

I liked this journal because it had tons and tons of new information such as test, studies, definitions, and results that i have never related to self-esteem before.  the charts that were used to describe all of the studies and results were ver helpful because i probably wouldn't have been able to understand the information if it was laid out as clearly as it was.  Another reason this was very helpful is because most articles i have found on self-esteem have dealt with younger kids or teens and this one dealt a lot with older people of both male and female so it was a lot of new information.  I did wish this reading talked more about the negative affects of too much positive self-esteem.

Research log 1

Macsinga, Irina, Laurentiu Maricutoiu, Florin Sava, and Delia Virga. "Implicit and Explicit Self-
Esteem and Irrational Beliefs."Journal of Cognitive & Behavioral Psychotherapies. 11.1              (2011): 97-111. Print.

In the article "Implicit and Explicit Self-Esteem and Irrational Beliefs" the authors discussed the direct correlation from how a low self-esteem can lead to a low outlook on ones self.  When you have a low self-esteem you do not obtain the confidence to make correct decisions at times.  The discussed how self-esteem could lead to addiction, and an example would be how a person would continue to use drugs even though they know it is harmful for them and could possibly kill them.  This leads to what i feel was the main purpose of the article, which is that it leads to irrational beliefs.  Basically saying you believe things that haven't actually happened or aren't true based on the outlook you have on yourself.  The authors discussed a number of symptoms caused from low self-esteem such as depression, high stress, and low self worth.  There were a number of helpful pictures and graphs of research they had done to try and find different age groups and cultural backgrounds that may suffer from low self-esteem.  Another main point was to establish a difference between implicit and explicit self-esteem, and they used a lot of research to state the out comes.  They used multiple different types of studies such as the general attitudes and beliefs scale, implicate associations test, and the name letter task.  These were very helpful because they all presented different results and were used to study a lot of different types of people.  That gave a lot different perspectives to look at so you can come up with valid results in the research.

This journal was very helpful to me because it was a broad idea of my topic, but had a lot of numbers a research to state clear and valid points.  This didn't touch on my entire question but it did hit points and had information which i didn't know.  Some of the effects of self- esteem, particularly the negative ones were very helpful and provided a lot of information for me.  The charts in which the authors clearly laid out there results of the test and experiments were also very helpful cause the numbers made the information very real.  I also liked the fact that it was written by a number of authors so i was able to get more then just one persons perspective on the subject.  There were also many references that were able to direct me to a number of different searches to find more useful information.
